Here are a few portraits made using the simple setup in the last photo.  Window light on one side and a reflector on the other.  Overhead light turned on (halogen so same color temperature as daylight) to highlight the hair.  A dark blue blanket hung on the wall.  The light fall off turns it black.  A simple setup anyone can do!  Try it.
